Winston-Salem City Council Public Hearing
Anticipated Fall 2017—Date To Be Announced
The South Suburban Area Plan was adopted by the Winston-Salem City Council and the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners in 2011 and is in the process of being updated. A public hearing before the Winston-Salem City Council regarding the South Suburban Area Plan Update is tentatively anticipated to occur in fall 2017. The final public hearing date will be posted here once it has been determined. Planning Staff will make a brief presentation about the draft plan to the City Council before interested citizens speak on the draft plan. All interested citizens are invited to attend the meeting and share their comments regarding the plan during the public hearing. The City-County Planning Board recommended adoption of the South Suburban Area Plan Update after a scheduled public hearing on Thursday, June 8, 2017, after several citizens commented on the plan. The plan was recommended with revisions to the Special Land Use Conditions section of the revised Planning Board draft plan (see pages 40-45 of the PDF copy located above under documents). These revisions relate to the future use of selected commercial sites along W. Clemmonsville Road and S. Main Street.
A drop-in meeting was held on April 18, 2017 where citizens were able to ask questions about the completed draft plan and give comments to staff. A citizen meeting was held on March 21, 2017 where staff presented recommendations related to transportation, parks, community facilities, historic resources and other related topics. A discussion on proposed land use recommendations for the planning area was held on February 21, 2017. These recommendations were intended to respond to comments and concerns voiced by citizens during the brainstorming session at the kickoff meeting held on January 24, 2017. At this kickoff meeting, the existing conditions report was presented which covers the demographics, existing land use, transportation features and housing statistics, among other topics.
