During the winter months, there are times when weather conditions are such that garbage cannot be collected. Even when the roads are clear, many yards have ice and snow which makes it dangerous for the collectors. When service has been canceled or when residents are asked to bring their garbage to the street, announcements will be made on WSTV Digital Media channels, , WXII-Channel 12 and in the Winston-Salem Journal. You can call 727-2638 for information. After 5:00 p.m. a recording will provide the inclement weather information.
For information about landfills and solid waste disposal, visit the Utilities Division.
Loose leaves should be raked to the curb (not into the street). In order to make collection easier, please follow these guidelines:
- Keep leaves free of sticks and other debris.
- Don't block leaves with vehicles.
- Place leaves in an easily accessible area.
Leaves may also be placed in yard carts for collection weekly during leaf season. At all other times, leaves should be either composted or placed in yard carts for collection. Carts can be purchased from the city.
Yard Waste such as leaves, grass clippings, shrubbery trimmings, garden residue, etc., can no longer be placed in bags or boxes for collection by city crews.
Residents not wanting to compost yard waste can have their yard debris collected in a special 96 gal. rollout cart is purchased from the city. Yard waste carts may be purchased at the City Warehouse, located at 1550 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive for $65.
