Street Sweeping

Street sweeping protects water quality by preventing litter, debris, and sediment from entering storm drains. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has defined street sweeping as a best management practice for preventing stormwater runoff. Street sweeping is also necessary for vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian safety.

Street sweeping services are provided six days a week by staff in the sanitation department and funded by the Stormwater Utility Fee, which pays for the maintenance of the stormwater system only on city right of way streets. Suburban areas are cleaned three times per year. As you move inward toward the Central Business District (CBD) and the density of housing increases, the cleaning frequency changes from 4 times to 5 times per year. The Central Business District is swept weekly.
